A six-metre offset cooker, built from a decommissioned pressure vessel
This is the big end of "no project is too big". A decommissioned pressure vessel came into the Queanbeyan workshop for a local company; what left was a commercial-grade offset cooker — cut open, re-plated, fitted with a fabricated burner manifold, expanded-mesh grate racks, internal heat baffles and an offset firebox on its own stand.
What the job involved
Nothing about a build like this comes off a shelf. The vessel had to be opened up along its length and re-plated, and every internal component — the burner manifold and its mounting fins, the grate racks, the curved end plates, the baffle that carries smoke the length of the chamber — was cut, formed and welded here. The offset firebox was fabricated separately and mounted on its own steel stand so the cooker sits at a workable height.
It is the same fabrication that goes into a stock crate or a tipper, just at a different scale. Which is the point: if it is steel and it is possible, we can build it.
